EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 96░C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 96░C use a closed system, ventilation.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS!

  • INHALATION
  • Headache.
    Ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED! Dry skin. Redness.
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
  • EYES
  • Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.
    Safety spectacles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION

  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place (extra personal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours).
Separated from oxidants, rubber, plastics, aluminium, light metals. Dry. Ventilation along the floor.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS HYGROSCOPIC LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR. TURNS YELLOW ON EXPOSURE TO HEAT.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide. Attacks aluminium, light metals, rubber, plastic.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV not established.
    MAK: 20 ppm; 80 mg/m3; skin (1996).

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20░C, on spraying however much quickly.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes and the skin. Swallowing the liquid may cause aspiration into the lungs with the risk of chemical pneumonitis.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes toxic effects upon human reproduction.

    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA

    N O T E S
N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone enhances the skin permeability for other substances. Insufficient data are available on the effect of this substance on human health, therefore utmost care must be taken.
